The first, and most important thing that successful indie music artists are aware of is their identity. You need to understand yours as well. Get a clear picture in your mind about what your band and music stands for, what it represents, what you are trying to accomplish or tell the world. You have passion for music and a willingness to express yourself with it. Dig deep and find out what that force or feeling is that compels you to play. Become familiar with it, write it down if you have to, and use it to attract your target audience.
That brings us to the next step, which is to know your audience. By this point I'm sure you are aware of what your audience looks like, how they act, where they hang out, and what their interests are. There is a general look, feel, and attitude for every genre of music. But the difference between the really successful indie music artists and the not so successful music artists comes down to this. Are you filling a need, void, or purpose in the genre of music you are targeting? Are you solving problems or providing answers to questions with your music that your potential fans may have? Know your audience and be involved in the community. People not only look to music for entertainment but also for salvation, and inspiration. Be the artist or band that provides much more than just entertainment. The really successful one's do.
Armed with knowing your targeted audience and using your music as a vehicle to inspire, you need to market yourself effectively. Promote your music to a specific niche, genre or even a sub-genre. For example, if you play rock music don't just promote yourself to rock directories. Instead focus on the sub-category of your music and promote to those places. For instance prog, emo, screemo, classic, metal, pop, they all have a culture and specific forums, websites, social hangouts, and gathering places online and off. Market your music to the appropriate sub-genre. Your exposure may seem smaller but it will be to a targeted audience and the results will be much more promising.
Indie music artists become successful on their own by connecting with fans emotionally and promoting their music effectively. Use the tools given in this article and you will see great results.

Vancouver's Indie Music Scene Rages On
New York City, Los Angeles, Seattle and San Francisco are all cities that come to mind when one is asked to name their favorite city in which to see live music. Vancouver, unfortunately, does not typically top the list of great North American music cities. The even more unfortunate thing is that with a considerable number of up and coming bands and quite a few established acts, Vancouver is one of North America's untapped resources for live entertainment. Our thriving indie music scene is replete with burgeoning talent and to cover each and every one of these bands would prove nearly impossible; here is a quick list and update on the happenings of three of Vancouver's more prominent indie bands.

How to create your own indie music, at home
Did you ever study creative writing in English class? When you started your creative writing process you initially may have thought...I don't know what I'm going to write about, I'm suppose to just write something without spending time thinking about what I'm writing about? Chances are, you could have been thinking this, but before you knew it, you captured 2+ pages of a great story or experience you had before you even stopped writing once. You can apply this same concept when creating indie music from the comfort of your home.
1) Create music extemporaneously.
Whether you try to compose a song on the piano, guitar, or drums etc. playing extemporaneously can really unleash your creativity, and help you compose music that you may not have even believed you were capable of creating. When you create your indie music, unleash your creativity without thinking about it. Don't think about every note or scale you're playing, JUST PLAY to create music that is truly unique, and set your music and talents apart from others.
2) Don't over think when you are creating your music.
The great thing is your music creations will come together must faster if you don't think too hard about what you're playing and how it's sounding. Create your music, and there will be time later to refine what you create.
3) Create indie music that is not overly mechanical and contrived.
To make sure your music sounds real and is a reflection of your creativity, again...JUST PLAY your music by expressing what is inside of you...your rhythm, your creativity etc. The best way to unleash this is to do it naturally, when you're relaxed, not over critical of every note you're playing.
4) Create your music in an environment that fosters your creativity.
Like any artist, you want to create your masterpiece in an environment where you feel comfortable and relaxed. Whether that's your home recording studio, basement or patio etc. make sure you're in a stress free environment, so your talents can really shine when you're creating your music.
5) Just play your music like you don't have a care in the world.
As you do that, you will probably start playing a cool new lick and groove that you were surprised you could create yourself. Remember, your first instinct in expressing yourself through your own music creation, is probably your best instinct.
6) Record your music.
An important note is that you should capture the great new music you create so you can share your creativity with others. Record your music, but try to forget that you're recording so you can relax and play what comes through your heart and soul.
Unleash your creativity, and don't over think what you're doing when you're creating your indie music...chances are you'll be extremely pleased with your results.

How to Promote Your Indie Music
Regarding that the major albums turned to be the sides that got too much terms to be filled, some new bands or new singers would prefer to avoid them. To create an album, some new comers should deal with the terms that the producers have already stated. The producers even have some rights to decide which personnel of the band could continue and which one couldn’t. If the band refused, the deal would be off. Somehow, some new bands and musicians would rather to stay away from major label. The money might be good and the promotions might be excellent, but that terms that the producers have spoken were too scary. Some bands might continue with some certain sacrificing, including eve they got to change the music color. Meanwhile, some others would prefer to stay in their idealism and refuse the contract terms.
Those musicians would rather to take their own way, creating their own label. This is the kind of musicians that we used to call as the indie bands. If you were one of them, you might have already known how to deal with this business. If you were newbie, you got to search for some info about how to deal with the indie recording process. The most important part is the after-recording process. Do you know how to promote your indie music? As the indie label, surely you got to pay all the process of the album on your own costs. This is not something cheap. Promotion costs would be even more expensive. So, there would be some actions that should be done to make sure that you could have the cheaper costs.
The regular way to promote your indie music album is by attending to some concerts and be participant there. While you were on the stage performing, you could add your own advertisements by announcing that you have already recorded your own album. Surely, you should ask for permits of the event organizer first. Then, you could follow this action by make some connections to some cassette and CD vendors. If it wasn’t possible, some indie bands use the friendship lines. They contacted their friends to promote it. If they got some friends who have some kinds of businesses such as boutique or some kinds of music outlet or coffee shop, they would ask them to display the album in their venue. Usually, since in the name of friendship, such kind of promotions wouldn’t cost at all.
